The concept of “on-demand” software and technology services has been receiving considerable notice of late as an attractive alternative to in-house software applications for many businesses. In-house systems are those that are purchased, installed and maintained by the customer. For many years, this has been the traditional approach to deploying and using software applications. On-demand systems can provide the same functions as an in-house system, but are accessed remotely by the customer, and these systems are owned and maintained by a third party vendor.
So why would a company consider an outsourced or on-demand solution rather than a more traditional in-house solution? There are some obvious answers to this question and some that are less obvious—most have to do with the inherent differences among these two approaches to providing application capabilities.
