Russell indices are widely used by investment managers and institutional investors for index funds and as benchmarks for both passive and active investment strategies. The combined market capitalization of stocks in the Russell 3000, which reflects about 98% of the investable U.S. equity universe, has increased more than $3 trillion from $15.3 trillion in June 2006 to $18.5 trillion in June 2007. The Russell 2000 is constructed to provide a comprehensive and unbiased small-cap barometer and is also completely reconstituted annually to ensure larger stocks do not distort the performance and characteristics of the true small-cap opportunity set. The Russell 2000 includes the smallest 2000 securities in the Russell 3000.
The Russell 2000 and 3000 were most recently reconstituted on June 22, 2007, the date that Kenexa was officially included in the indices. Russell's index reconstitution process is followed closely by many investors because its U.S. indexes currently have $4 trillion in assets benchmarked against them and account for an industry-leading 52% of institutional benchmarked products.
